TIPS ON COPING WITH LEG LYMPHOEDEMA

Always Wear Compression Garments During Daily Activities.

  1. It is advisable to wear footwear at all times in the house and outside.

  2. Dry well in between toes after bathing to protect from fungal infections.

  3. Treat any cuts or grazes promptly by washing the area and applying antiseptic.

  4. It is essential to have well-fitting shoes. E.g. Ankle boots with laces give great support. High heels are not recommended. Check shoe seams do not cut into the feet.

Avoid the following:

  1. Hot baths/showers and saunas.

  2. Under-floor heating.

  3. Crossing legs when sitting.

  4. Pressing down on the balls of the feet when sitting or standing.

  5. Wearing tight clothes – should be loose-fitting, particularly belts/underwear.

  6. Exposing the legs when sunbathing – cover up and use a high factor sun cream.

Sport:
Exercise is important and generally the benefits of sport far outweigh any risks but a discussion with your lymphoedema therapist or GP is advisable.

Swimming and water sports are beneficial but always be aware of hygiene and wear foot protection at all times in and out of the water.

Diet:
Body weight should be kept within normal limits. Keep to a low fat diet. Limit salt intake and alcohol. Drink plenty of fluids.

Clothes and Shoes:
There are lists of retailers to help you find clothes and shoes which are comfortable and well-fitting.

Medical:
Avoid injections in the muscles or joints of the affected limbs if possible. No acupuncture should be carried out on the affected area.
