TIPS ON COPING WITH ARM LYMPHOEDEMA
Always Wear Compression Garments During Daily Activities.
- Wear gloves when doing housework, washing up and gardening.
- Use a thimble when sewing.
- Take care with knives when preparing meals.
Avoid the following:
- Very hot baths/showers and saunas.
- Cutting cuticles and take great care cutting nails. Use an electric razor to remove body hair.
- Lifting anything heavy such as shopping.
- Wearing a tight watch strap/bracelet/rings on the affected side.
- Wearing a shoulder bag on the affected side.
- Wearing tight clothes –should be loose-fitting, particularly belts/underwear.
- Pet scratches and bites.
- Exposing the arm when sunbathing –cover up and use a high factor sun cream.
Sport: Exercise is very important and generally the benefits of sport far outweigh any risks
but a discussion with your lymphoedema therapist or GP is advisable.
Swimming and water sports are beneficial but always be aware of hygiene and wear foot protection at all times in
and out of the water.
Diet:
Body weight should be within normal limits. Keep to a low fat diet. Limit salt intake and alcohol.
Drink plenty of fluids.
Hand Aids:
If some daily activities prove difficult, there are various aids to facilitate writing, holding a newspaper/book,
using a kettle, holding cutlery etc. An occupational therapist will advise.
Clothes and Shoes:
There are lists of retailers to help you find clothes and shoes which are comfortable and well-fitting.
Medical:
Avoid having blood pressure being taken on the affected arm and also allowing blood samples to be taken or
injections or IVs on the affected side if possible.
Avoid acupuncture on the affected area.
