TIPS FOR TRAVEL AND HOLIDAYS
Vaccinations: These should not be given in the affected limb. If several are needed,
arrange to have them at intervals if possible.
Flying: Long flights, low cabin air pressure and poor air supply can have a major adverse
effect on lymphoedema. Reserve a roomy seat in advance – an aisle/bulkhead seat perhaps if you have leg lymphoedema
- in which case a doctor’s letter is often requested by the airline.
General travel: Some precautions can be taken to make the travel as comfortable as
possible.
- Have a session of MLD just before travelling and on return.
- Wear loose-fitting clothing.
- With leg lymphoedema, wear comfortable well-fitting shoes and do not
remove them during the journey.
- Avoid carrying heavy luggage.
- Avoid alcohol. Drink plenty of water.
- Exercise when possible. If going by car, have frequent breaks and walk around.
On Holiday:
- Try to avoid locations where biting insects are prevalent but always protect against bites with insect
repellent.
- Never scratch a bite – apply tea tree oil or lemon juice or vinegar to lessen the irritation.
- When sunbathing, always cover the affected limb and wear a high factor sun cream.
- Avoid strenuous exercise unless you are used to it. Take frequent breaks.
- Compression garments can be kept cool if necessary by spraying with water during the day and, before
putting on at the beginning of the day, they can be put in a bag and placed in the fridge/freezer for a short
while.
- If you are prone to cellulitis, ask your doctor about antibiotics as a precaution when away
travelling.
